General

Industries more exposed to GenAI saw 20% more startup formation, including outside traditional innovation hubs, with many new companies building AI products rather than simply automating internal work. This startup growth increased employment and wages overall and shifted entrepreneurship toward founders with technical, AI-related backgrounds from the occupations most affected by GenAI.

Frontier AI labs are beginning to resemble semiconductor companies: escalating capital requirements, rapid obsolescence, cyclical funding, and eventual consolidation around a few dominant players. The larger opportunity may sit above the frontier models, where startups build valuable applications, infrastructure, and physical-world systems on top of increasingly cheap intelligence.

Companies can quietly lose product-market fit when their ideal customer profile broadens, customer signals fragment, messaging weakens, or acquisition channels stop producing new buyers. The fix starts by diagnosing whether the problem is accidental drift, market exhaustion, product clarity, or distribution, then either narrowing back to the core customer or deliberately choosing a new one.

When Vertical AI founders should own a layer, access it, or commoditize it.

Replit describes a “self-driving company” where connected AI agents handle coding, reviews, incident response, analytics, sales research, marketing, and support while humans set goals and make key decisions. Its internal agent system nearly tripled engineering output per employee without increasing incidents or review times, while also improving productivity across the rest of the business.

Marketing, Sales and PR

Modern GTM strategies have evolved. Learn how fast-growing startups are building authentic communities to drive growth.

Traditional activation metrics overfocus on onboarding and ignore whether marketing, sales, and product are attracting and serving the right customers. Companies should track the full journey from setup to aha moment, activation, and habit, with long-term retention as the real measure of success.

Money and Finance

Despite VC skepticism and AI hype, marketplaces are thriving in new forms, including data, prediction, token, UGC, space, and robotics, powered by AI efficiency and hard-to-replicate network effects. Fundraising data shows a highly selective market with fewer deals and a difficult Seed-to-Series A gap, but strong terms and valuations for breakout companies with real traction.

Charles Hudson says “pre-seed” and “seed” labels have become largely meaningless as round sizes and valuations expand, so Precursor is broadening its focus to evaluate the best companies being built before Series A. The core question for early-stage VCs is whether their strategy gives them access to the small number of outlier companies that drive fund returns.

The “Praying for Exits” meme accurately reflects VC passivity. But generating DPI will soon require investors to actively manufacture it by embracing an old – not new – model of what liquidity means.
